1¢ Franklin Issue of 1851-1857, PLATE 4 Position 56L4 |
Type IIIa, Relief F Issued both imperforate and perforate. Plate 4 changed it's appearance as many plating marks faded away due to plate wear, and new plating marks developed over the life of the plate. One of the most annoying aspects of trying to identify Plate 4 positions is the appearance and disappearance of these plating marks. The red arrow below the U of US indicates the small colorless "F" Relief flaw. The Ashbrook/Neinken diagrams exaggerate the size of this flaw. This flaw is found on all F reliefs from Plate 4. | Figure 3. (BELOW) The plating diagram does not illustrate the true nature of the diagonal line cutting thru the O of ONE. The dot on the shoulder can be seen above the N of ONE, as illustrated in the plating diagrams. The left image also shows a dot in the white area to the left of the second arrow from the bottom. This new plating mark has been confirmed as consistent.
