1¢ Franklin Issue of 1851-1857, PLATE 4
Pos 100R4, (Scott #6)
Scott #6, Blue,
Type Ia , Relief F
Issued both imperforate and perforate.
Had this been a perforated copy then it would be Scott Number 19.

The red arrow below the U of US indicates the small colorless "F" Relief flaw. The Ashbrook/Neinken diagrams exaggerate the size of this flaw. Many positions on plate 4 are similar, and also, due to plate wear, they changed their appearance notably in a short period of time. One of the most annoying aspects of trying to identify Plate 4 positions is the rapid change in appearance and disappearing plating marks.

OTHER NOTES: A faint vertical guideline or plate scratch inside of Ornaments L and M and into Ornament N

Figure 1. (BELOW) The red arrow below the U of US indicates the small colorless "F" Relief flaw. The Ashbrook/Neinken diagrams exaggerate the size of this flaw. Also of note are the faint scratches of color in the upper left unnamed ornament and ornament A. The long scratch is illustrated in the Neinken plating diagram.

Figure 2. (BELOW) Faint scratches of color to the left of Ornament D. Only one scratch is illustrated in the Ashbrook/Neinken diagrams.

Figure 3. (BELOW) Other scratches partially illustrated in the plating diagram.

Figure 4. (BELOW) The lower left plume is incomplete. This is not illustrated in the plating diagram for this position but has been confirmed as consistent and is a helpful indicator.

Figure 5. (BELOW) The key is the dot in the C of CENT. This blurry dot is not shown in the diagrams for this position but has been confirmed on other examples. The plating diagrams illustrate dramatic blurs in and below the N of CENT. These most likely fade or develop inconsistently during the life of the plate.
