1¢ Franklin Issue of 1851-1857, PLATE 4
Position 35R4

Type IIIa, Relief D
Issued both imperforate (Scott 8A) and perforate (Scott 22).

The published plating diagrams indicate many scratches and plating marks. Plate 4 changed it's appearance quickly as it wore and not surprisingly many of the plating marks appeared and then quickly faded away. One of the most annoying aspects of trying to identify Plate 4 positions is the rapid change in appearance and the disappearing plating marks.

Figure 1. (BELOW) A faint vertical mark of color above Ornament S and a faint curl of color in the P of POSTAGE. Many of the marks found on Plate 4 change their appearance as the plate wears. The dash and blotch of color at the top of the P of POSTAGE is not known if constant or reliable.

Figure 2. (BELOW) A nearly vertical plate scratch to the right of Ornament R and the blurs are the definative marks that plates this copy as 35R4.
