Figure 1. (Below) The Neinken plating mat illustrates a small short horizontal line of color over the "S" and "P" of US Postage. This blur actually extends much further to the left. The violet arrow at left points to a short vertical dash not indicated on the Neinken mat.

Figure 3. (Below) The plating diagram is not clearly drawn and it overemphasizes these faint plate scratches. In addition, the strong vertical gash in the top right corner (which is indicated in the Neinken mat as a plating mark) is actually the short "side scratch" of the Type V Relief E.
