1¢ Franklin Issue of 1857-61, PLATE 5
Position 1R5,
Blue,
Type Va, Relief A
Issued only perforated.

Sixteen top row stamps from plate 5 have a blur between ornaments x and y. This "Ornament X/Y blur" occurs on Positions 1L5 to 10L5 and 1R5 to 6R5. It was produced by a bit of foreign matter adhering to the transfer roll. The first position it occurs on, 6R5, shows this feature the strongest. It gradually became weaker with each successive entry, working right to left, until it became very faint on 1L5. Neinken notes this as a plating mark on the plating diagrams for a few positions, namely 2-9-10L5 and 5R5. See Figure 3, below.

Figure 1. (Below) Small dot in the "N" of CENT. This dot also appears on Positions 10L5, 9L5 and 8L5. A faint blur protrudes from the right scroll ball remains. This blur is not illustrated in the Neinken plating diagrams and has been confirmed as constant.

Figure 2. (Below) A blurry dot or fuzzy plate blister appears below Ornament M and inside of Ornament N. This mark is illustrated in the Neinken plating diagrams as a vertical blurry line.

Figure 3. (Below) Small dot to the right of Ornament X, not illustrated in the plating diagrams, but is consistent. The lower four red arrows indicate the "Ornament X/Y Blur." Sixteen top row stamps from plate 5 have this blur between Ornaments X and Y. This "Ornament X/Y blur" occurs on Positions 1L5 to 10L5 and 1R5 to 6R5. It was produced by a bit of foreign matter adhering to the transfer roll. The first position it occurs on, 6R5, shows it the strongest. It gradually became weaker with each successive entry, working right to left, until it became very faint on 1L5.
