CURL IN SHOULDER VARIETY

Of all the Type V varieties perhaps the best known and the more sought after, are the interesting shoulder curls coming from the right pane of Plate 7, positions 57R, 58R, 59R, 97R, 98R and 99R7.

Figure 1. (Below) A faint diagonal dash of color to the left of the unnamed ornament between Ornaments A/S not illustrated in the plating diagram but confirmed as consistent.

Figure 2. (Below) Plate scratches at the upper right corner and Ornaments L/M. These are not illustrated in the plating diagrams but are useful aids in confirming position. Small dot in the E of POSTAGE also not illustrated in the plating diagrams. Note that this dot occurs on all 6 shoulder curl positions (57-58-59R7, 97-98-99R7), thus it is not useful in identifying the actual position.

Figure 3. (Below) Close up view of the SHOULDER CURL. The curl found on Postion 57R7 is very similar looking.

Figure 4. (Below) There is a strong diagonal scratch through Ornament C, and a second unconfirmed scratch to the left of it. Additionally, there is a small dot below Ornament D not illustrated in the plating diagrams. Ornament D is very incomplete, it lacks the leaf entirely. The other 5 shoulder curl positions all have a complete Ornament D, so this is a definitive way to identify 97R7 from the other 5 positions.
