1¢ Franklin Issue of 1857-1861, PLATE 8
Pos 47R8, (Scott #24)
Scott #24 Blue,
Type V, Relief E
Issued only Perforate.

DOT UNDER "S" VARIETY
The dot under S appears more to look like an apostrophe in reality.

The violet arrow below indicates a blurry dot which only shows itself on some copies. The archive has 5 copies and the blurry dot shows on 3 impressions. Position 88R8 also shows the apostrophe under S. The plating diagrams do not differentiate these positions clearly. Several curls and dots not shown in the plating diagrams can help the student definitively plate these positions.

FIGURE 1. (Below) Plating marks as shown on plating diagram. Ashbrook/Neinken notes this a "DOT under the S".

FIGURE 2. (Below) Plating diagrams do not show the lower curved line breaking under the N of ONE.

FIGURE 3. (Below) A horizontal scribe/guide line of color cutting through the G and E of POSTAGE.

FIGURE 3. (Below) A near vertical scratch to the left of Ornament H.
